Universal Time Offset and Conversion

Current Universal Time (UT): (Hit the 'Reload' button on your browser to Update)

According to our server ....
The Current Universal Time is: 14:39

NEW itemTip! You may want to get a digital clock or watch that displays time in 24 hour format; and keep it set to Universal Time.

Determine the UT OFFSET for your time zone:

Ex.: Morning Ex.: Afternoon
1. Write down current UT: ___h ___m
14h 24m
18h 05m
2. Write down current local time: ___h ___m
9h 24m
1h 05m
3. Convert to 24 hour clock: ___h ___m
9h 24m
13h 05m
4. Subtract (3) from (1): ___h ___m
5h
5h

The final number (5 hours in both examples for Eastern Standard Time in the United States) is the UT OFFSET for your time zone. This means that it is 5 hours earlier in this time zone than it is at the Prime Meridian running through Greenwich, England.

Sometimes you may find that it is a different day (generally a day later) at Greenwich when you access this page. In that case this site may be useful in figuring out your UT offset. You can look up any place on the globe and it gives the current time and date, plus a statement like "Standard Time -0500 UTC". This is for Virginia and means we are 5 hours behind UTC.

The UT OFFSET changes when daylight saving time begins or ends, because UT does not change. When daylight saving time is in effect in the Eastern US Time Zone (Eastern Daylight Time), the UT offset is reduced to 4 hours.

5h
5h
